Le Marin Martinique: Pictures and description

Le Marin is anchored at the bottom of a large and magnificent bay on the southern Caribbean coast of Martinique. An excellent shelter for boaters, it hosts the largest marina in the Antilles.

The story

The town of Le Marin was, from 1731, one of the first places inhabited by French settlers. Given the quality of its shelter for sailors and its privileged position facing the Sainte Lucie canal, Le Marin was the scene of numerous naval battles against the English fleets until the beginning of the 19th century. The town was extremely damaged by the cyclones of 1891 and 1903. The town, which has developed greatly in recent years, does not present any particular charm. However, the Jesuit-style church built in 1766 and enlarged in the 19th century is one of the most beautiful historic buildings in Martinique. According to local historians, the church altar was originally built for the cathedral of Lima (Peru), but the ship carrying it sank on the coast of Cape Marin, east of Marin.

Activities to do in Le Marin

The Marina is undeniably one of the main attractions of the town. Splendid sailboats are docked there. Long-distance sailors, of all nationalities, participate in the entertainment of the Marina's cafes and restaurants. This increases in August, during the cultural festival organized by the municipality and whose theme changes each year.

Le Marin is also one of the starting points for a day trip in maxi-catamarans, either for the Caribbean coast of Martinique or to discover the neighboring English-speaking island of Saint Lucia.

The commune of Le Marin is, with that of Sainte Anne, the only one to offer both on the Caribbean coast and on the Atlantic coast. The most beautiful beach in Le Marin (and it is beautiful!) and that of Cap Macré on the Atlantic coast. Not very easy to access, it is also very little frequented. Le marin hosts some of the most beautiful beaches in Martinique.
