Le Diamant

Le Diamant town Martinique : Pictures and description

The "Rocher du Diamant"

The town owes its name to the famous "Rocher du Diamant" which faces it 4 km from the coast. Steep and 175 m high, it was conquered, fortified and inhabited for 17 months by the English at the beginning of the 19th century before being taken over by the French.

Today the site is classified as a nature reserve for bird reproduction. It is also populated, it seems, by many snakes. The small road between Le Diamant and Anses d’Arlet offers magnificent views of the rock.

Of volcanic origin, the Diamond is appreciated by divers for its underwater fauna and flora but also for its numerous caves. Several clubs in the surrounding area offer opportunities for all levels.

Activities to do at Le Diamant

The town of Diamant is one of the important tourist resorts of Martinique. Its magnificent white sand beach lined with coconut trees and areas shaded by “grape trees” and other almond trees is large enough – more than 3 km, the longest in Martinique – for everyone to be calm. Not very suitable for swimming for children given the large waves generated by the current, it is very popular with surfers. You will find several of our most beautiful house rentals in Martinique nestled on the heights of the town.

Diamant Bay is overlooked to the west by several hills, including Larcher Hill peaking at 478m. They offer a wide choice of routes to hiking enthusiasts. The one which leaves from Anse Cafard towards Petite-Anse, passing through the dry forest by the summit of Morne Larcher, is probably the most interesting. It offers magnificent views of the bay and the region.

A few kilometers from the town, you will find the Anse Cafard Memorial, which is a set of 15 white stone statues representing African slaves looking at the ocean. It commemorates a maritime tragedy of 1830, when the Portuguese slave ship "La Roxelane" ran aground on the rocks of Anse Cafard, causing the death of many slaves. This is the last slave ship sinking in the history of Martinique.

Of course, Le Diamant is also well known for its large beach lined with resin trees and coconut trees. It is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Martinique.
